Module 6 Assignment
The short story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edgar Allan Poe, who wrote a short story
on two people Montresor and Fortunato. The story shows Montresor hating and ending up killing
someone who felt as if they were friends with Montresor (which was Fortunato). The story is
sad, but somewhat funny of how ironic it was. “The Cask of Amontillado” has many forms of
literary devices such as the narrator, imagery, diction, irony, and symbolism.
“The Cask of Amontillado” had a narrator named Montresor who felt like he had been
insulted by his friend Fortunato. He showed how evil he was, and how he felt like he needed
revenge. He was not only evil, but he was very smart, had everything well planned out, and was
cunning. When telling this story in the future, he still felt angry and had no regrets of doing what
he did. We see many forms of imagery in the story as well. One example of imagery used is
“Drops of moisture trickle among the bones.” using the sight and hearing senses (Poe, 1977).
Another example is "'The vaults are insufferably damp. They are encrusted with nitre.'" To show
how cold and wet the catacombs were (Poe, 1977).
Diction is the choice of words used in poetry, and Poe did a great job choosing his words
carefully. Diction can also be used as a term for over exaggerations used in a story as well. There
are many examples through the story such as “We had passed through long walls of piled
skeletons, with casks and puncheons intermingling, into the inmost recesses of the catacombs”
(Poe, 1977). He chose to be more descriptive and exaggerate more to show the audience of what
