H1: Historische inleiding en situering
Situering
→ Principe: beschadigingen/dysfunctioneren in de hersenen leiden tot cognitieve stoornissen
- directe relatie (focaal letsel waarneembaar op scan)
- diffuse relatie (probleem in functioneel netwerk)
→ Neuropsychologie = een discipline die de relatie tussen hersenen en gedrag bestudeert
- Als wetenschapsgebied die een oplossing tracht te vinden voor theoretische vraagstukken
• Onderdeel van de (cognitieve) neurowetenschappen
- Als klinische toepassing die tracht om het cognitief functioneren op een systematische
manier te onderzoeken en te beschrijven (~testinstrumentarium)
• Zelfstandige discipline
→ Vroeger: neurologen en psychiaters
- Nu: klinisch neuropsychologen
→ Cognitieve functies, stoornissen en ziektebeelden
- Visuele waarneming, ruimtelijke cognitie, geheugen, taal, aandacht en executieve functies,
emotie en sociale cognitie, actie en motoriek, …

→ Craniotomie: openen van de schedel
- Geen teksten over deze ingrepen
1. Oude Egypte: eerste studies van de hersenen
→ 3000 à 2500 v Ch: Ebers papyrus
- Priester Imhotep (pionier in het begrijpen van hoe de hersenen werken)
- Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus (vertaald in 1930!)
- Geen magische, maar wetenschappelijke kijk op geneeskunde
- 48 medische casussen (incontinentie, hoofdtraumata, …) werden uitvoerig beschreven (eerste
keer dat het woord “brain” werd gebruikt)
→ Voorbeeld uit de tekst:
- “bij palpatie van de hersenen kan de patiënt schudden” = epilepsie
- Hersenletsels hebben effect op meerdere delen van het lichaam (ogen, ledematen,...)
- Effecten van letsels aan het ruggemerg (incontinentie)
• MAAR hier is het hart nog steeds: “the seat of the soul”
