Summary
Charlie is starting high school. He struggles with the loss of his best friend from
middle school, Michael, who committed suicide and the loss of his aunt, who died in
a car crash. He soon finds acceptance in 2 things: his English teacher Bill Anderson
and his new friend Patrick and his stepsister Sam who let him into their friendgroup.
Things don't always go well at home. Charlie's older brother left the house to go to
college and his older sister is dating a boy who abuses her

In this part of the book, Charlie has quite a lot of trouble coming to terms with the
death of Michael and Aunt Helen. He falls in love with Sam. He soon tells her this. I
didn't really expect him to tell her this so quickly. I like the way Sam reacts to this,
because she does reject him, but in a way that is not very painful and they remain
good friends after that.

Summary
Charlie’s beginning to enjoy school because he gets to hang out with Patrick and
Sam’s group of friends including the cute and smart Mary Elizabeth. Bill gives
Charlie his first B on an essay. Wich makes Charlie ver happy, since it means he is
making progress. Charlie started working for a fanzine called Punk Rocky. Sam
is dating a guy named Craig. Charlie still loves Sam and he's hurt and jealous.
Charlie’s brother bails on coming home for Thanksgiving because he’s too behind on
his schoolwork, which makes Charlie’s mom very upset. For Charlie’s family the
holidays are a difficult time. Because it reminds them of Aunt Helen. This year with
Thanksgiving, they watch a video of Charlie's brother playing soccer and Charlie
says he is thankful his brother played soccer and no one got into
a fight. At Christmas, Charlie and his friends decide to play the role of
a secret Santa’s. He pulled Patrick's name and made a mixtape that Patrick loved.
