I. Factors That Could Impact Topic

Factors that impact obesity are biases and assumptions. Negatives biases and assumptions

have existed for several years regarding those who are obese. Cossrow et al. (2001) states

“Obese people are typically characterized as physically unattractive, flawed in character, and

personally responsible for their overweight condition. They are commonly described as

‘lazy,’ ‘ugly,’ ‘stupid,’ ‘lacking willpower,’ ‘incompetent,’ and ‘indulgent.’ The

consequences of such stereotypes have been shown in several studies” (par. 2). These biases

and assumptions of those impacts perceptions and do not benefit those who are obese or

motivate them to educate and make changes, but rather typically make this disease worse for

them. It

is common for society to blame victims when it comes to conditions like obesity, rather than

consider environmental factors and changes that need to be implemented to improve the

wellness of all (Cossrow, 2001). Conversations should be made on how nutritional health and

resources can be more accessible for all, as opposed to using negative stereotypes to insult

those who are obese.

II. Potential Obstacle

A potential obstacle to obesity is lack of health education and resources. Discussion on

the topic of obesity can be more constructive when society can understand that many of those

do not have proper access to education surrounding their wellness or resources to improve it,

like parks and gyms. Even for those who do have access, healthcare workers are typically not

trained properly in order to understand or treat obesity (Dietz et al., 2015). Increased

education surrounding obesity for those working with those to improve their wellness would
