The Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) survey surprised me in a positive way

because I thought my score would be a lot higher than it was. According to the CDC (2023),

ACEs are childhood traumatic experiences that can have a long-lasting detrimental effect on

an adult's physical and mental health. These encounters may involve abuse, neglect, difficulties

within the home/community, or other unfavorable incidents (“What are adverse childhood

experiences”, 2023). My ACE results totaled out to 3 out of a possible 10. In comparison to the

National average my score is consistent with about 9.5% women and men in the general

population, while most of the population in this study displayed no adverse childhood

experience, 36.1% (“Participant Demographics”, 2021).

According to Esaki & Larkin Holloway (2013) the mean ACE score for a sample of 94

social workers was 2. Behavioral healthcare professionals are associated with having higher

ACE scores than the general population. This is further proven by Steen and associates (2020),

they also indicated that the mean ACE score out of a sample of 5540 social workers was 2.1. I

currently work as a behavioral therapist and with my score being 3, it was higher than the

averages of the behavioral health professionals in the two studies. Due to personal experiences

with trauma, individuals who have higher ACE scores may be well-suited for the behavioral

health industry. We have a profound awareness of trauma and hardship, which fosters empathy

and gives them a distinct perspective when working with clients who have had similar

difficulties. Additionally, to service clients seeking advice and assistance, the professional's

own resiliency in overcoming hardship may act as a source of inspiration and an indicator of

hope.

My personal experiences may have a variety of effects on my current and future

employment in the field of behavioral health. First, while dealing with clients who have
