, Students with language-based learning disabilities (LBLD) have trouble expressing and

processing oral and written language. These students benefit from small group instruction.

Content is taught to students with language-based learning disabilities by using visual cues,

semantic cues, gestural cues, and phonemic cues. Instructions should be followed from the

students’ IEP (Individualized Education Plan). These children have difficulty with executive

function skills, working memory, and attention to tasks.

According to the Landmark School foundation there are six teaching principles. These

principles guide how teachers approach the presentation of both content and skills across the

curriculum. Principle number one is to Provide Opportunities for Success. Providing

opportunities for success is the most basic of the building blocks of the Landmark School. A

child will feel more successful and more confident if they are reaching their full potential.

Teachers provide examples, and assignments to build the students’ confidence so they don’t

become overwhelmed. Principle number two is to Use Multisensory Approaches. Visual

techniques include graphic organizers for structuring writing and pictures for reinforcing

instruction; auditory techniques include presenting discussions and reading aloud; and tactile

techniques includes creating paragraphs about objects students can hold. This means the teachers

present information to the students with sensory modalities such as visual, auditory, and tactile.

Principle number three is Micro-unit and Structure Tasks. Micro-uniting means analyzing the

parts of a task or assignment and teaching the parts one at a time. These strategies help the

students proceed in a step-by-step, success-oriented way.
