Why certification? ANS - -Improves patient safety

-Meets new federal regulations for Dialysis Technician Certification

-Ensures completion of an approved training program

-Ensures completion of competency skills checklists

-Ensures continuing education

How to get certified? ANS - -Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT)

-Provided by Nephrology Nursing Certification Commission (NNCC)

Dialysis Technician ANS - -Know the field and the job; become an expert --Do high-quality work

-Follow a high standard of ethics

-Have good work morale and motivation

-Respect patients and colleagues

Team members ANS - Technicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers, and doctors. Each patient is the
most important member of his or her own team.

Dialysis ANS - Filters wastes and excess water out of the blood. Between treatments, wastes and excess
water build up again.

Two main types of dialysis ANS - hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD).

HD is the most common

, Access for Hemodialysis ANS - A vascular access. During a treatment, two large needles are placed in
the access. Each needle connects to tubing. Blood flows out of the patient to a dialyzer (artificial kidney)
through one needle. It is filtered and cleaned in the dialyzer and goes back to the patient through the
other needle.

Dialysate ANS - Wastes and water pass through hair-like filters in the dialyzer and into a fluid

dialysis machine ANS - sets the rate of blood flow, has safety alarms, and mixes and delivers dialysate.

Peritoneal Dialysis ANS - It uses tiny blood vessels in the peritoneum (the lining of the inside of the
abdomen) as a filter to clean the blood

Access for Peritoneal Dialysis ANS - Through a catheter placed through the wall of the abdomen, or
sometimes through the chest wall. Wastes and excess water flow out of the tiny blood vessels and into
the dialysate.

Exchange ANS - "dwell" time of a few hours, used dialysate is drained out and fresh dialysate is added.

Payment for Dialysis and Transplant ANS - In 1972, Congress was convinced that it made sense to help
patients be working, tax-paying citizens. Medicare EndStage Renal Disease (ESRD) Program took effect in
1973

Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - CMS ANS - Medicare pays 80% of the cost of dialysis and
kidney transplants. Health plans, Medicaid, state programs, or patients pay the rest.

Conditions for Coverage for ESRD Facilities ANS - Rules dialysis centers must follow to get payment
from Medicare

Employer group health plans EGHP ANS - EGHPs are primary. They pay first for the first 30 months of
treatment

Medicare ANS - Secondary during this time. It pays some or all of what the EGHP does not cover. After
the 30 months are up, Medicare becomes primary and the EGHP pays second.
