Why Statistics Are So Important
Note to Instructors
This chapter emphasizes the importance of statistics to students regarding
psychological knowledge, personal lives, academic pursuits, and chosen
career paths. Throughout, specific examples are provided regarding the
importance of being a critical consumer of statistics. Because statistics can
often be an intimidating (and required) psychology major course, students
are equipped with reasons why they may experience anxiety and
trepidation during the course in the text, and classroom activities and tips
are provided here to further reduce student anxiety and fear. Students will
develop an understanding of why statistics need to be computed and
reported when conducting research to facilitate an appreciation for the
importance of the course. Next, important fundamental concepts including
statistical approaches, samples, populations, constructs, operational
definitions, independent variables, dependent variables, descriptive
statistics, and inferential statistics are covered. The chapter then transitions
to scales of measurement and the distinctions between discrete and
continuous variables. Throughout the middle sections of the chapter,
several classroom activities and handouts are provided here that allow for
students to practice and hone their skills through independent work,
comparing their responses with a classmate, and instructor feedback and
class discussion. Finally, the chapter concludes with a conversation on
ethics in psychology research. Classic examples of research fraud are
covered in a manner that sets up the shift to psychology becoming a more
open science and ways to achieve this goal. The chapter ends by
reemphasizing the variety of ways in which being a critical consumer of
statistics holds utility.
