, Social issue

Eating disorders are a phenomenon that is mostly developed in adolescence (GGZ
standaarden, n.d.). Although it is not seen as something new, recent years have witnessed an
increase in adolescents who have developed such eating disorders, posing serious health risks
(NU.nl, 2022; Voedingscentrum, n.d.). However, not only the adolescents themselves, but also
their social circles, including family and friends, are impacted by these disorders
(Voedingscentrum, n.d.). Therefore, the prevalence of eating disorders can be identified as a
social issue within our society.

While there are several variants of such eating disorders, this paper will concentrate
mainly on anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Anorexia nervosa is characterized by the
purposely avoidance of food coupled with an intense fear of weight gain, resulting in severe
underweight conditions. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by individuals experiencing
recurrent episodes of “binging”: the consumption of enormous quantities of food within a
short timeframe. This behavior is then followed by forced vomiting, excessive exercise,
fasting, or the misuse of laxatives, as compensation for their overeating. These actions are
also linked with extreme underweight conditions (Eating disorders, n.d.).

Increasingly more studies are investigating the influence of social media in developing
such eating habits, with results showing a positive correlation between the duration of social
media engagement and exposure to developing eating disorders (Padín et al., 2021). As a
consequence, it is important to investigate the possible causes of this social problem and from
that, fluidly establish an effective policy.
