CPDT-KA Stages of Puppy
Development
Neonatal (birth to 2 weeks) - ANSWER Born essentially blind and deaf. Can
see light/dark, hear muted sounds, and sense touch, taste, and smell. Teeth are
not present at birth. Unable to maintain body temperature. Reliant on littermates
and Mom for warmth. Mom must lick the pups to encourage urine and faeces.
Between 7 and 14 days, the eyes and ears open. Sensations improve.
Puppy gradually grows more conscious of his environment.
Transitional Period (2-3 weeks) - Answer Puppies begin to explore and form
social interactions with one another.
Mobility starts to grow.
Socialisation (3-13 weeks) - Answer Puppies continue to learn about the world
around them, interacting with their littermates and mother, and learning about
humans. Learning about the sights, sounds, smells, and textures of our world.
Puppy must have pleasant experiences with new things so that he learns that the
world is exciting rather than fearful.
*Note: the socialisation window does not close at 13 weeks. It is a continual
procedure that will last the dog's entire life. USE OR LOSE IT. However, early
encounters shape the dog's perception of its surroundings.
Adolescence (13 weeks – 3 years) - ANSWER Hormonal changes (even if
neutered), growth spurts, and behavioural changes are commonly observed
during this time. Training might slide if not done consistently. Jumping,
barking, destructiveness, fear/insecurity are some of the key issues that young
puppies frequently exhibit.
