Antigenen zijn substanties die in vitro of in vivo kunnen reageren met een specifieke antistof.
Immunogeen is wanneer een antigeen een antistof kan opwekken.
Bloedgroepantigenen zijn eiwitten of suikers die zich bevinden op dragermoleculen van de RBC-
membraan, zijn meestal membraaneiwitten of lipiden. (Ze zijn gelegen op celmembraan van zowel RBC,
WBC als bloedplaatjes)
Antigene determinant is het deel van het antigen dat complementair is aan de overeenkomstige antistof.
Het deel dat het sterkste bind = immunodominant

antistoffen ontstaan na contact met vreemde bloedgroep antigenen.
Belangrijk IgG, IgM, IgA. IgD en Ig E hebben geen functie in de immuunhematologie. IgG is in grootste
concentratie aanwezig in plasma. IgM is de grootste immuunglobuline en kan complement activeren. Kan
NIET doorheen de placenta. IgA komt voor in epitheliale secreties.
