BUSINESS ENVIRONMENT APPLICATIONS II: PROCESS, LOGISTICS, AND
OPERATIONS — D079
RNM1 TASK 2: LOGISTICS, OPERATIONS, AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT
A. Discuss options and considerations for transporting the product described in the scenario
to the retail facilities by doing the following:
1. Identify two different product packaging options and explain why you chose them.
The two different product packaging options I chose for this scenario are tertiary and primary.
The reason is that the business mentioned moves a large number of mandolins. Whenever a
company is dealing with large quantities, it makes sense to use tertiary as it would palletize the
items and reduce the risk of them moving around and being damaged. The second type I went
with is primary. This would protect each item but could be more costly than the tertiary option.
2. Identify two different potential risks to consider when storing your product and describe
how you will mitigate each risk.
Two potential risks would be the temperatures in which the products are stored and the products
being damaged as they are moved from a warehouse to a retail facility. Wood is porous and the
humidity is a key factor in the product’s storage as it can make it more fragile, or even warp the
mandolins thus affecting the quality. I would ensure my storage location is humidity controlled
and the staff understands how this would impact my product. As far as the damage during
transport, I would see if I could locate a company that specializes in transporting fragile goods if
it made sense from a cost perspective or place fragile stickers on the merchandise so carriers and
employees at other companies knew how to handle the mandolins.
3. Describe two transportation modes to move your product from the manufacturer to the retail
facilities. Then explain the advantage and a disadvantage of each chosen transportation mode.
One transportation method would be truck delivery and the other would be air because they are
shipped to Europe. Truck delivery would work well because it is very accessible and relatively
cost-efficient. For nearby states, it would make a lot of sense because it's relatively quick.
Trucks can easily damage merchandise if it is not secured correctly, and you are at the mercy of
