Introduction to the Family life cycle
Carter and McGoldrick developed the family life cycle model. (McGoldrick M, 2011. The
Expanded Family Life Cycle: Individual, Family, and Social Perspectives, 4th ed. Boston: Allyn
and Bacon). This involves six stages which all families must go through. These are the
unattached young adult, the newly married system, the family with adolescents, the launching
and empty nest, and the family in later life. Each stage also has second order changes that have
to be accomplished. These stages help a practitioner to view symptoms and relationship
difficulties in relation to normal functioning over time. As families go thru these life stages,
there are also secondary tasks that have to be accomplished. In each stage families face
challenges in the family life that allow a person to gain new skills which help them to work
through these changes. Not all families pass through these stages smoothly. They can
experience setbacks like illness and financial problems, or death of a family member. If Skills are
not developed in one stage, they can be learned in a later stage.
Outline: The first stage been the unattached young adult. Where He or she has to leave home
and become independent and the focus is on personal development. The goals for a functional
