This is a description of how I found my ESI (Electronically Stored Information) from Instagram and the challenges I encountered while doing so. This information is relevant to the class, Legal Tech and eDiscovery. Those who are new to eDiscovery or obtaining ESI may find this helpful.
I chose to find my ESI on Instagram. I followed these steps to find my
data on this platform. I googled “how to find my data on Instagram”, and it
led me to Instagram’s Help Center. I logged into my account and clicked the
More in the bottom left, then Settings . Instagram showed me that I
was Now in Accounts Center. According to Instagram’s instructions I tried to
Your information and permissions, but it was simply text. I found this much
easier to follow on my phone. I followed all the previous steps on my phone
and was successful in accessing the Your information and permissions page.
The site was more intuitive from here because it listed the following: Access
your information, Download your information, Transfer a copy of your
information, and search history. Instagram directed me to select Download
your information and then click Download or transfer your information. On
download your information page it said, “Your information includes things
you’ve shared, your activity and things we collect. First choose the
information you want. Then, when your files are ready, we can transfer them
to another service, or you can download them to your device”. I clicked
Download or transfer information. Instagram then gave me two options; I
could download information from Facebook or Instagram. I chose Instagram.
Then Instagram asked me, “How much information do you want?” I selected
All available information, and then I selected Download to device. Instagram
moved me to a page titled Create files to download, and the page had this
message, “When your download is ready, we’ll send you a notification. For
security, you’ll only have 4 days to download your files. Fortunately,
Instagram allows for a custom date range for the date; I customized it to
Wednesday, January 1, 2020, to April 16, 2024. I kept the format in HTML,
the Media quality at Medium, and the Notify at my email address. I then
tapped Create files. I was then moved to a page which showed me that my
information download was in progress, and I received an email that showed
me the same thing and that my information would appear on the Download
your information page. The email also said that I would receive another email
when my information is available. I received an email from Instagram stating
“The Meta information files you requested are now available to download.
You can find your files on the download your information page,”. I tapped on
download your information. The Download your information page appeared
saying, “Your information includes things you've shared, your activity and
things we collect. First, choose the information you want. Then, when your
files are ready, we can transfer them to another service, or you can
download them to your device.” I selected Download. Instagram asked for
my password for security purposes, but I forgot my password. I had to create
