Ch. 1, Exercise 1.5
The relationship between obesity and cancer is described and discussed
in this chapter. Conduct a search to answer the following questions.
1. The incidence rates for six cancers associated with obesity
are increasing in young Americans. Identify them.
a. According to Curly Cupp (2020), esophageal, pancreatic,
colon and rectal, breast, endometrial, kidney, thyroid, and
gallbladder cancers are associated with obesity. According to
the CDC (2017), the International Agency for Research on
Cancer has identified thirteen cancers that are associated with
obesity, these include meningioma, multiple myeloma,
adenocarcinoma of the esophagus, cancers of the thyroid,
postmenopausal breast, gallbladder, stomach, liver, pancreas,
kidney, ovaries, uterus, colon and rectum.
2. What is the prevalence rate of obesity in people younger than 18 in
your state?
a. Obesity affects 20.4 percent of Tennessee's youth aged
10 to 17, ranking Tennessee fourth out of 50 states and
the District of Columbia (State Obesity Data, 2020).
3. Which children are at highest risk for obesity in your state?
a. In the state of Tennessee, boys (19.4%) vs. girls (17.3%)
are at highest risk for obesity (WIC data and statistics,
2020). White children (19.3%) compared with black
children (15.6%) and children of other race (12.3%) (WIC
data and statistics 2020).

4. Are there any prevention programs in your state that address this
issue?
a. Tennessee has a comprehensive, statewide nutrition and
physical activity plan called: Eat Well, Play More
Tennessee. Eat Well, Play More Tennessee's main goal is to
promote the health of Tennesseans of all ages and abilities
by enacting policy and environmental reforms in the places
where people live, work, learn, play, and pray (Eat Well,
Play More Tennessee, 2021). The plan focuses on a number
of target areas and vulnerable populations, including healthy
and affordable food availability in low-income areas,
breastfeeding initiation and duration, which has been
clinically proven to reduce the risk of pediatric overweight,
and sugar-sweetened beverages, which are the single largest
driver of the obesity epidemic, according to a study
published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2009
(Eat Well, Play More Tennessee, 2021).
5. Has your state passed and enacted any laws designed to decrease
obesity?
The Tennessee Department of Health's (TDH) "Gold
Sneaker Initiative" helps the TDH achieve its purpose of
protecting, promoting, and improving people's health and
well-being in Tennessee (Gold sneaker initiative, 2021).
Gold Sneaker was created in 2008 to improve health and
wellness policies in Tennessee's licensed childcare providers
(Gold sneaker initiative, 2021). Any licensed childcare
provider in Tennessee who has completed the training and
application criteria is eligible to participate in the Initiative
(Gold sneaker initiative, 2021). Licensed Tennessee
childcare providers can improve the health of the children in
their care
