Introduction
Nowadays, most organizations make digital transformations in their corporate activities,
including work instructions and other type of information. Through the digitalization of this
information, corporate information is more visible. But what exactly is visibility and what is
the effect of visibility on work outcomes? Ter hoeven et al. (2019) developed an Information
Visibility Scale to measure the concept of information visibility within an organization on the
basis of three sub attributes: availability, approval and accessibility. In this study, visibility
will also be studied on the basis of these three sub attributes.
To address a particular work outcome, this research studies the association of visibility with
engagement. Previous research already analyzed the construct information visibility with the
combination of engagement (Goswami et al., 2013; Mallon & Webb, 2000). The aim of this
study is to test this scale within an organization and to analyze the association of visibility
with work-engagement. Therefore, the research question of this study is:
RQ: To what extent does the perception of organizational information visibility predict
employees’ work engagement?
H1a Availability is positively related to work engagement.
H1b Approval is positively related to work engagement.
H1c Accessibility is positively related to work engagement.
H2a The relationship between availability and work engagement is stronger for management
than for the service desk.
H2b The relationship between approval and work engagement is stronger for management
than for the service desk.
H2c The relationship between accessibility and work engagement is stronger for management
than for the service desk.
The conceptual model of this research can be found in Appendix I.
