Questions 1 to 5:

1. What aspects of the lab report format do you find reflected in the journal article?
What are the similarities? Report at least 3 valid similarities.

● Similarities in structure, i.e., an introduction paragraph, procedures, etc.
● A page for references and inclusion of in-text citations.
● Presenting data through tables, charts, and graphs with numbers and titles.
● Gives conclusions and discussion of results.
● Writing in the past tense.

2. Are there any aspects of the lab report format you did not find reflected in the journal
article and vice versa? What are the differences? Report at least 3 valid differences.

● Unlike the lab report, the journal article discusses limitations and the
information they may have missed.
● The speech in this journal article was not indirect.
● Lab reports written by a student and journals written by groups of people.

3. What have you learned about scientific writing and writing lab reports from doing this
activity that you will implement when you are working on your lab report?

● Using concise but detailed language and writing in the indirect past tense.
● Including numbers and titles in all graphs, charts, and tables.
● Make sure to include a description of what the data tells you.
● Sections should be labeled and separated.
● Include in-text citations.

4. What are 5 DOs (things you will do) on your lab reports to earn a good grade on your
lab report and avoid plagiarism?

● Including in-text citations.
● Having titles, descriptions, and names of the axis (if a graph)
● Having separate sections with labels.
● A references page at the end of the report.
● Including sections for introduction, purpose, method, calculations, and results.

5. What are the 3 DONTS (things you will NOT do) on your lab report to earn a good
grade on your lab report and avoid plagiarism?

● Not including in-text citations.
● Not including a final references page.
● Not making graphs detailed with titles and descriptions.

Question 6- Self Reflection:

, What did you learn about plagiarism and how to avoid plagiarism from this activity as well as
from completing the plagiarism quiz?

Answer- Understanding plagiarism is crucial in academic writing. I've learned the
importance of properly crediting sources through thorough in-text citations and a
comprehensive references page to avoid unintentional plagiarism and to acknowledge the
ideas, data, or words borrowed from other sources. Additionally, the quiz emphasized the
significance of paraphrasing and not simply copying and pasting information. To avoid
plagiarism, one must use in-text citations, include a references page, and paraphrase the
information they use as a reference.

Question 7

What constitutes proper lab attire in FIU Chemistry labs? What are the consequences if you
are NOT in proper lab attire?

Answer- FIU Chemistry labs recognize long pants, long-sleeved shirts, and close-toed shoes
(ones that cover your feet entirely) as proper lab attire. Thin clothes like yoga pants,
leggings, and tights are not permissible due to the insufficient protection they provide. If a
student is not in proper lab attire, they will not be permitted into the laboratory for safety
concerns and will have to miss the entire lab.

Question 8

What is the General Chemistry lab policy with respect to late coming? What are the penalties
and how can this be avoided?

Answer- According to the General Chemistry lab policy, a late student will not be allowed
into a lab and will receive an unexcused absence for the day resulting in a zero for the in-
class notebook submission and the post-lab report. This zero as a result of an unexcused
absence counts towards the 3 zeroes that give you a failing grade. This can be avoided by
arriving on time, with all necessary equipment. In the case of emergencies, illnesses, family
deaths, and FIU-related travel, the student is expected to contact Dr. Swamy through
Canvas inbox with the necessary documentation attached.

Question 9

(a) Can you use any notebook as a lab notebook or does the general chemistry lab
require a specific kind of lab notebook? What are the specifications?
(b) Why is this particular lab notebook used in general chemistry labs?
(c) Do you need to use a lab notebook or can you take notes on your iPad your
computer or any other electronic device?
Answers-
(a) General chemistry does not permit the use of any notebook as a lab notebook and
requires the carbon copy lab notebook. The student is expected to carry the carbon
copy notebook as they enter the lab and draw data tables ahead of time for the lab.
