D016 LEADERSHIP FOUNDATIONS
AND ETHICS TASK 2 WESTERN
GOVERNORS UNIVERSITY
, A1. Describe personal values you hold that align to professional codes of ethics
for educational leadership; include an explanation of philosophies and
experiences that shaped these values.
Fairness
The personal values that I hold dear are based in my history with the field of Special
Education. My early childhood and college education were shaped by my experiences
with varied learners and different cultural backgrounds. Therefore the first areas of my
value system are that of inclusion, communication and advocacy. I will do my best to
ensure that all learners, cultural backgrounds and perspectives are safe to express and
contribute to the school communities for which I am the administrator.
Respect
My brother faced the challenges of ADHD long before it was commonly accommodated
in our small community. I saw his shame and my parents almost pleading with an
unaccommodating school system. While in college I worked with adults and youth with
disabilities who fought for basic acknowledgement in the community. Over time these
attitudes have changed, but I believe that we must strive to make everyone welcome
and heard in our schools. We must believe that all students can achieve if given the
opportunity of resources and time. We must provide respect for everyone despite the
challenges that they face.
Honesty/Integrity
I might be different from other candidates in this masters program. I already know
where I will work and the community that I will need to coexist with and represent. I am
nearly fifty years old. I have taught for and currently work as an administrator for the
same district. I have been a student, teacher, parent, and administrator all in the same
district. . There is no plan for me to move or change my home. I know these people,
and I know that a shared sense of priority is a must. While most schools are open
systems, my community believes it is a closed system; even though that isn’t true. One
way to ensure success is to facilitate the shared leadership in the schools that I lead. I
want to cultivate communication.
My time in this district has strengthened my personal belief that honesty and integrity
are essential. Acting in a way that is moral- I can sleep at night and be honest about my
decisions in the way I chose to live and I will carry that into my time as an administrator.
Transparency and accountability are necessary in any school system. The stakeholders
in my community are no different. My experiences with different administrators has
taught me that these two are essential components of my professional code of ethics. I
must be able to explain my decisions and motivations to parents, students,
