the lungs

(exhalation valve, lines, connection, nebulizer, pt connection). tighten all
connections, coach pt to keep a tight seal w/the lips or use a lip seal
- check for sticking breathing valve
- add terminal flow gradually to compensate for small leaks (bennett)

If the machine auto-triggers on, check for the following: Right Ans - - too
sensitive. adjust the sensitivity control to make it more difficult to initiate a
breath
- rate control on. make sure the expiratory timers are off

If the pressure manometer needle is very slow to return to baseline, check for
the following: Right Ans - - sticking valve
- retard device in place
- pt forcefully exhaling. instruct pt to passively exhale

If there is very little gas flow, check for the following: Right Ans - - gas
source for 50 psig
- inlet filter dirty
- occluded breathing hose
- gas leak

if the machine cycles off prematurely: Right Ans - - check for/correct any
circuit occlusion
- flow may be too high. adjust the gas flow to a lower setting (Bird)
