Ambulate - to walk
Fall assessment rating scales - forms that give a numerical rating for each patient's risk
for falls
Chair monitor, bed monitor, or position alarm - A pressure-sensitive device that
generates an alarm at the nurse's station when the patient's weight is no longer sensed,
indicating that the patient is attempting to get up.
Leg monitor - A type of chair monitor; it attaches to the patient's leg like a large bandage
and generates an alarm when the leg is in a dependent position, indicating that the
patient is attempting to stand.
Heimlich maneuver - an emergency procedure to help someone who is choking
because food is lodged in the trachea
cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) - emergency procedure consisting of external
cardiac compressions and artificial ventilation
Mass casualty event - A public health or medical emergency involving thousands of
victims
body mechanics - the proper use of the body to facilitate lifting and moving and prevent
injury
center of gravity - The middle point of the body, below the umbilicus and above the
pubis, around which the body's mass is distributed.
