Three basic functions of a production switcher - ANSWERSTo select an appropriate video source from
several inputs, to perform basic transitions between two video sources, and to create or access special
effects
Preview bus - ANSWERSA row of buttons on the switcher that can direct an input to the preview monitor
at the same time another video source is on the air. Also called the preset bus. It is identical to the
program bus in the number, type, and arrangement of buttons. The "line-out" of the preview bus does
not go on the air, however, or to a recording device but simply to a preview monitor.
Delegation controls - ANSWERSButtons on the switcher that assign specific functions to a bus. These
controls let you choose a transition or an effect. By pressing the BKGD button, you activate the program
and preview/preset buses for cuts-only switching. To perform the actual cut from the line-out picture to
the new picture selected on the preview bus, you need to press the red CUT button. By pressing MIX,
you expand the transitions from cuts-only to include dissolves as well. When you press the WIPE button
instead of MIX, the transition will be a wipe and not a dissolve.
Program bus - ANSWERSAlways directs its output to the line-out. If you don't need to preview the
upcoming pictures, you do it all on the program bus.
Key bus - ANSWERSLets you select the video source, such as lettering supplied by the CG, to be inserted
into the background image, supplied by the program bus.
Auto-transition - ANSWERSAn automated fader bar. Instead of moving the T-bar, the auto-transition
control does it automatically. Useful when you must time the dissolves. To activate the transition, you
press the AUTO TRANS button next to the CUT button.
Key-level control - ANSWERSAlso called the clip control or clipper; adjusts the key signal so that the
letters appear sharp and clear during the key.
