Auteur
Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt is geboren op 28 maart 1960 in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon, een gemeente
in het arrondissement Lyon. Hij is de zoon van een fysiotherapeut. Hij is atheïstisch
opgevoed, maar beschouwt zichzelf als een agnost. Nadat hij in Lyon zijn diploma had
gehaald ging hij filosofie studeren aan de zeer prestigieuze École normale supérieure. In
1987 studeerde hij af met een scriptie over Diderot en de metaphysica. Na zijn studie ging
hij zich bezighouden met het schrijven van toneelstukken naast een baan als hoogleraar
filosofie aan de universiteit van Savoie. In 1991 is zijn eerste stuk, Les nuits de Valognes,
klaar en dat wordt een succes. Het wordt later zelfs in Engeland uitgevoerd door de Royal
Shakespeare Company. Zijn grote doorbraak komt echter in 1993 met het stuk Le Visiteur.
Dit stuk wordt bekroond met 3 Molières, waaronder die voor beste auteur.1
