1. Introduction

1.1 Objectives

a) To understand the motion of an object in one dimension with constant
acceleration by using relevant mathematical equations and presenting
graphical proof for the same.
b) To determine how the slope of two different graphs gives us the values of
velocity and acceleration.


1.2 Theoretical Background
Different equations of motion allow us to calculate relevant values required.
For motion with constant acceleration, the velocity as a function of time is given
by:

v = vo + at ---(1)

, where vo is the initial velocity of the object, v is the final velocity, a is the
acceleration of the object throughout the journey and t is the time taken for it to
travel that distance.

The velocity as a function of distance is given by:
v2 = vo2 + 2a(x – xo) ---(2)

where vo is the initial velocity of the object, v is the final velocity, a is the
acceleration of the object throughout the journey and x and xo are the final and
initial position of the object.

This experiment will be split into two parts:

The first part will make use of photogates fixed along an inclined air track. These
photogates will measure the initial and final speed of the glider along with the
time interval t. Then theoretically, we’ll calculate the acceleration using equation
(1). The distance between the photogates will be kept variable i.e., one
photogate will be fixed at a point and the other will be moved a little further away
every run, in order to get accurate measurement.

In the second part, a motion sensor will be used to detect the motion of the glider
down the inclined plane and the acceleration will be determined.

c) Air supply with a hose
d) Steel lifting platform
e) Glider with a photogate flag
f) Photogates (x2)
g) C-clamps (x2)
