Theory:
• To find the rotational inertia of a small object, the axis of rotation is given by:

o
▪ I rotational inertia
▪ M mass
▪ R distance
• To find the rotational inertia of a solid disk of uniform density rotating around the axis is:

o
• To find the rotational inertia of a uniform ring rotating around the axis is:

o
▪ R1 inner radius
▪ R2 outer radius
• To find the rotational inertia of a uniform thin rod rotating around an axis perpendicular
to the rod that goes through its center is:

o
▪ L length
• To find the rotational inertia that consists of a uniform thin rod, along with two small
masses fixed at the ends of the rod, rotating around an axis perpendicular to the rod that
goes through its center is:

o
▪ m mass (two small masses)
• In the axis is displaced from the center of mass, the rotational moment of inertia can be
calculated using the parallel axis theorem:

o
▪ h distance (from center of mass)
• Finding the experimental rotational inertia of the ring with a known torque and angular
acceleration is:

, Physics - Online Lab: Moment of Inertia

o
▪ IE experimental rotational inertia
▪ τ torque
▪ α angular acceleration
• Where in this case, torque is
o F applied force
o r distance between axis of rotation, where force is applied
o θ angles between r and F
▪ τ (torque) is at its maximum point when F and r are perpendicular to each
other
• In this experiment the applied force, which was the tension in the string which was tied to
the pulley, a part of the rotational apparatus. At the end of the string was a mass m which
served to pull the string. And the radius r value was simply the radius of the step pulley.
The radius served to be perpendicular to T tension.
• Using this information derived the torque formula as:
o τ = rT
• When we apply newton’s second law on the mass hanging m, the formula results as:

o F = T = mg =  − m a
• Solving for the tension gives:
o T = m(g-a)
• Making the applied torque as:
o τ = rT = rm(g-a)
▪ The experimental rotational inertia IE can be figured out by using the
measured torque τ along with the angular velocity
▪ The accepted rotational inertia IA can be figured out by using the
dimensions and the mass of the object rotating
