How do you structure a source question (30 marks)?
PQRST structure
Provenance
Quote
Reliability
Study (Own knowledge)
Test (Does the quote support the question being asked?)
What is provenance?
Provenance
Consists of:
- Purpose of the source: What does the writer want to achieve by writing it?
- Study: Use own knowledge to explain context at the time of writing or why the source
was written.
- Reliability: How reliable is what the writer saying? Is it accurate to historical evidence?
How do you structure the 'QRST' section of the answer
1- Quote: Take a section from the source that will help you answer the question and
make your argument.
2- Test: How does the quote link to the question? i.e. A source written by Cromwell is
useful to explain his motivation for certain decisions.
3 - Study: Use historical knowledge to analyse how reliable the source is to actual
events.
4- Conclusion - Make an interim judgement about whether the source supports the
question or not, and make not of whether its reliable or not. (i.e. an source that supports
the question but is unreliable isn't useful evidence to support the question)
