ELECTION OF 1960
● John F. Kennedy (democrat) vs. Richard Nixon (republican, Vice President to
Eisenhower)
○ Nixon argued that he was the stronger guy for the Cold War
● Turns out ridiculously closed
● First televised election
○ Presidential debates
● Kennedy wins with VP Lyndon B. Johnson
○ Youngest president
○ Brought super educated people into the administration


SPACE RACE
● Eisenhower was unable to make any significant progress during his administration
● Kennedy said in his inauguration that before the end of the decade, they would get a man
on the moon
○ Made many other advancements in the Space Race during his administration
● Eventually accomplished by Neil Armstrong

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT
● Schools and other things began to be desegregated (1960)
● Woolworth’s Five and Dimes and Restaurants Sit In (1960)
○ Four African Americans sitting in a restaurant in North Carolina decided to stage
a sit in because the restaurant was segregated
○ People didn’t serve them
○ Over the next couple of days, more people joined them for the sit in
■ They filled every counter seat
■ The restaurant was losing money because people stopped coming to the
store and they weren’t serving the African Americans
○ Because of this, anywhere where there was a counter and where there was
segregation became a location for a sit-in
■ Some people got tormented
○ Eventually, they decided to start serving anybody who came to the counter
■ Sit-ins were successful
● Freedom Riders
○ People from the North coming to the south via buses to help with the civil rights
movement
■ Violence ensued
● Buses were stopped and people were attacked
