What is the function of the propulsion system and what systems does it power -
ANSWER Provides thrust for the aircraft

Provides power to aircraft systems like electrical, hydraulic, and fuel pumps

Engine Cowling - ANSWER Metal panels covering engine components

1) Protect components
2) decrease drag
3) Supplies engine with airflow

Purpose of the engine - ANSWER Generate power to turn the propeller to
produce thrust

Three elements necessary for engine operation - ANSWER 1)Compressed air
(provided by starter)

2) Fuel (provided by Fuel Management Unit FMU)

3) Heat (provided by ignition system)

Type of engine - ANSWER Free-turbine, reverse flow design, turboprop
engine

What does free turbine mean? - ANSWER compressor and power turbines are
not physically connected

What does reverse flow design mean? - ANSWER air enters the engine at the
rear and moves forward during combustion cycle

, Major sections of the engine - ANSWER Accessory Compartment (rear
section)
Gas Generation Section (middle section)
Power Turbine Section (front section of engine)

where is the Accessory Compartment located - ANSWER (Major section of
aircraft)
Location: Rear of engine

Gas Generation Section - ANSWER (Major section of aircraft)
Location: Between accessory compartment and the power turbine section

Components: Compressor inlet, compressor, combustion chamber, compressor
turbine

Function: Inlet air enters the engine through the compressor inlet, compressed
by a 4 stage axial flow compressor and single stage centrifugal flow
compressor, the air is then mixed with fuel and ignited in the combustion
chamber, causing the gas to expand which then drives the compressor turbine

Power Turbine Section - ANSWER (Major section of aircraft)
Location: Front section of engine

Components: Power Turbines, exhaust case, reduction gearbox, propeller shaft

Function: Expanding gas passes through the compressor turbine and drives the
power turbines (they rotate in opposite directions AKA free turbine), the gases
flow through exhaust system back to the atmosphere.

The power turbine drives the reduction gearbox, which drives the propellor
shaft at reduced RPM to produce horsepower

Engine Exhaust system - ANSWER Location: exhaust ports located on either
side of engine

Components: Exhaust ports, exhaust stacks
