Unit 6 assignment 1
Introduction
In work placement 1, I was at a Nursery in a pre-school room with children from the ages of
2-3 years. There were about 10 children in the preschool class.
In placement 2 I was in a primary school, in the reception year class so the ages where from
4-5 years of age, which had about 10-15 children.
In placement 3 I was at a residential care home, which held some residents with dementia
and some residents who are not able to look after themselves without a bit of help or a lot
of help. The resident’s ages here varied from 70 years of age to 105. When I started
placement there was 17 residents and now there is 15.

One of my placements was at a primary school in a reception class where I had the role to
look after 4-5year olds, as well as teaching them the basics of maths and literacy. The class
was made up of 15 children and although it was not a primary school for children with
learning difficulties, one child that attended lived with autism and she struggled mostly with
anxiety and sensory processing disorder. To make her feel as if her needs were considered
and valued, the staff had a sensory corner that she enjoyed interacting with. The particular
child helped me reflect on my own skills and attributes by certain situation where I was not
able to help due to lack of training, is when she had nosebleeds or she would use a ruler or
her finger nails to hurt herself due to her anxiety and I was not allowed to help her as I was
not allowed to be alone in the bathrooms without a member of staff. This made me feel
helpless as I was not able to quickly help her which could trigger outbursts. Although it was
good experience, as I got to develop my communication skills with children of different
needs, the lack of skills I had made me feel demotivated, this making the skills gap
increasingly obvious.
Developing professionalism
At my time at the primary school, I had an experience where a child called me by my first
name because they knew me outside of school, when she should have addressed me as
