Erik Erikson's Psychosocial Development
a) Selected Theory and Stage: (Identity vs. Role Confusion)
Erik Erikson's theory of psychosocial development comprises eight stages, each

stage of Identity vs. Role Confusion, occurring during adolescence (approximately
12-18 years), is critical for developing a sense of self. During this stage, individuals
explore their values, beliefs, and goals to form a coherent personal identity. Success
in this stage results in a strong sense of who they are and confidence in their life

critical thinking skills. This episode became a turning point in shaping my self-
identity, helping me realize my strengths in communication and reasoning. This
experience also introduced me to the importance of self-expression and social
interaction, both of which became core aspects of my identity.
c) Connection Between the Stage and Personal Experience
Erikson’s Identity vs. Role Confusion stage directly relates to my developmental
experience of joining the debate team. Adolescence is a period marked by
experimentation with roles and exploration of identity. Joining the debate team
allowed me to experiment with a new role—becoming a confident speaker and
thinker—which played a significant part in resolving the psychosocial conflict of this
