INTRODUCTION
We live in rapidly changing times, especially in health care. In fact,
many state that the one thing that has now become a constant in health
care is change. Change is sometimes hard to accept and may cause
upheaval and turmoil, but it also provides tremendous opportunities
for those who can adapt. As educators, we must learn not just to
survive but to thrive in today’s new health care environment so that
we can better prepare our students. The accompanying text is about
change and giving students the opportunity to gain effective skills
that will help them thrive.
Just exactly what are the skills we want graduates to possess when
they enter the workforce? These skills are described in a report from
the United States Secretary of Labor’s Commission on Achieving
Necessary Skills (SCANS). The SCANS project determined skills and set
standards for success that individuals need in the modern workplace.
This report set national skill standards that provided a common
language and reference point for educators, students, employers, labor
leaders, and consumers. In essence, it states the basic skills or
workplace know-how each graduate should possess in order to succeed.

Piggybacking on the SCANS report, the National Health Care Skill
Standards Project identified those skills necessary for a student to
successfully enter the health care industry. These skills include
technical skills such as CPR and patient transport. There are several
good books that deal with teaching these technical skills. The
accompanying text focuses on what some have referred to as the soft
skills identified by this project. These skills include such topics as
critical and creative thinking, communication skills, medical ethics,
and interpersonal development to name a few. Although they are ―soft
skills,‖ they are very difficult to teach and develop in students, but
critical in the eyes of employers. This text facilitates the
development of these skills through an interactive approach
emphasizing critical and creative thinking, integrated academics, and
portfolio development.
The definition and implementation techniques related to integrated
academics may vary, but they all emphasize the need for critical
thinking skills that can be applied to situations that are relevant to
learners. Another common theme is the importance of the learner taking
on more self-management and responsibility in the learning process.
Whatever changes you make, keep in mind that the major goal is to
provide learners with a foundation of knowledge and skills that will
ensure success in their chosen career and instill the importance of
being a lifelong learner.
A major portion of integrated academics includes activity-based
pedagogy, which facilitates individual and group activities or
projects to allow the integration of many skills and disciplines.
These can include research, electronic data processing, word
processing, oral and written communication skills, as well as
application of math and science knowledge. In addition, components of
teamwork, community networking, and outreach may be emphasized. The
key factor in integration is to engage the student in relevant
learning. In other words, the learner needs to see ―what’s in it for
me?‖ and ―how will this relate to my future?‖
This type of learning now becomes goal- and action-oriented and
includes a high level of problem solving. The learner will see the
entire scope of bringing a project to fruition and the importance of
good written and communication skills for its successful completion.
Finally, the text emphasizes self-assessment of the student’s current
level for each particular soft skill, followed by activities and
methods to improve skill level, culminating in a personalized action
plan.

PURPOSE AND PERSPECTIVE OF THE CHAPTER

they are and how they think and learn. Students will be asked to
