Learning Aim B: Explore manufacturing techniques and testing methods for an organic liquid.
Aim: To prepare and produce a sample of ethyl ethanoate and test its purity using different methods.
Ethyl ethanoate is a solvent used for chemical reactions.
Preparation:
1) 20cm3 of ethanol and 20cm3 of glacial ethanoic acid need to be mixed completely in a 100cm3
round bottom flask
2) Slowly add 5 cm3 (value per 10 pipettes) of concentrated sulfuric acid while cooling and mixing.
3) When the mixture is homogeneous, add some anti-bumping granules and place the flask in the
distillation apparatus.
4) The round bottom flask should be connected to the reflux condenser and heated to boiling
point. Two thirds of the mixture must be distilled.

5) Transfer the distillate to a separating funnel
6) Add 25 cm3 of deionized water
7) Stop the funnel, turn it upside down and open the tap after the first inversion and occasionally
during mixing
8) Allow both layers to separate and gently pour the bottom layer.
9) Add 25 cm3 of saturated sodium carbonate solution
10) Wait for the 2 liquids to react and the gas to be released.
11) Repeat step 7
12) Repeat step 8, making sure as much of the solution is completely removed as possible.
13) Repeat steps 9-12 with another wash of 25 cm3 of saturated sodium carbonate solution.
14) Repeat steps 9-12 with a wash of 25 cm3 of saturated salt Solution.
15) Swirl after adding each drop of solution.

Methods of ethyl ethanoate
Ethanoic acid, ethanol and concentrated sulphuric acid are heated using an electric heater. The ester
that is formed is distilled. It is collected in a separate beaker by condensation. Because esters are
volatile, they evaporate first from the reaction mixture. The reverse reaction is prevented from
occurring by removing the mixture by distillation.
