Storing and communicating information in a laboratory 22nd November 2022
Learning Aim D: Understand how scientific information may be stored and
communicated in a workplace laboratory.
In a forensic laboratory forensic scientist spend time analysing body fluids, fingerprints
and tissues associated with DNA. Textile fibres from clothing and other furnishings, glass
and paint and other types of particulates. Mobile phones and other digital media are
also particularly important for studying and comparing and then working out what it is
likely to mean in the context of the case.
Textile Fibres
Textile Fibres are one of the most interesting kinds of evidence because they come in
several types of colours and several types of fibre. They are also good evidence to lead
to specific items in cases where you focus your attention on a piece of evidence so it can
lead you to find DNA and other types of evidence. Example: In a murder case, one of the
key items they found was a pair of shorts not worn by the suspect but by another
member of the family. They found body fluids on the shorts and extracted DNA from it,
which revealed it belonged to the suspect's wife. Blood pattern analysis is a powerful
form of evidence that tells you what went somewhere. When blood has been shed, they
look at the pattern the blood forms and it tells you a lot of things. They photograph this
type of evidence so that they have a record of it. Blood patterns tell you what happened
and the sequence of events at the crime scene and tell you where to take samples for
DNA profiling. DNA profiling is an expensive process and so the number of samples that
you send is as low as possible.
Forensic scientists record any data that needs to be taken by writing notes, audio
recording notes (these are then made into written notes), photographs and video
recordings. LIMS helps retrieve sample information and results in a DNA worksheet for
all steps in the DNA analysis process.
