Teaching Focus

This chapter discusses basic molecular genetics. The terms introduced here will be used throughout
the text. In view of the newer mandates for inclusion of genetics in nursing education, a major focus
of this chapter is understanding what these terms mean and how they are used in genetic assessment
as well as in discussion of genetic disorders. Teaching should focus on the following:

• Stressing the fact that all nucleated cells contain all genes but that any one cell type only
expresses those genes critical for that cell type’s function
• Differentiating the characteristics among genes, DNA, and chromosomes
• Helping students understand the concepts of genotype and phenotype
• Learning the processes involved in DNA replication
• Introducing the major types of inheritance associated with single-gene traits/disorders
