Review standard airborne droplet contact precautions.
Standard – all patients
Airborne- measles, varicella, pulmonary, laryngeal TB, N95 mask
Droplet – travels 3-6 feet strep pharyngitis PNE, haemophiles b influene,
scarlet fever, rubella, pertussis, mumps, mycoplasma PNE, meningococcal
PNE w/ sepsis, pneumonic plague
Contact-RSV, shigella, enteric diseases caused by micro organisms, wound
infx, herpes simplex, impetigo scabies, multi drug resistant organism
Mag sulfate- most common s/e : stomach upset, diarrhea, flushing, nausea,
h/a, generalized muscle weakness, diplopia
Mag toxicity – absent DTR, respiratory depression, pulmonary edema, cardiac
arrhythmias
Hepatic encephalopathy- brain cant function when damage liver doesn’t
remove toxins from blood
Nursing care – supporting body systems, s/s lf decreased liver functions,
avoid worsening cerebra edema, monitor LOC, BP, vl satus, blood coag test,
complications – permn.

Dumping syndrome – condition in which food high in sugar moves from
stomach into small bowel too quickly
Decrease fluids w/ meals
Change diet more protein – meat, poultry, creamy PB, fish, complex CHO
Limit high sugar foods
Chrons disease – chronic inflammatory bowel,
Avoid high fat foods butter, cheesy dishes, fried foods, spicy foods, alcohol,
caffeinated drinks, energy drinks, chili, sriracha
Peptic ulcer disease sore develops in lining of esophagus, stomach, small
Intestine
Apples, pears, oatmeal, other foods high in fiber
, Diverticulitis – inflammation in one or small pouches in dig tract
Avoid – certain fruits, pears, apples plums
Dairy foods, milk yogurt, ice cream
Fermented foods sauerkraut, kimchi,
Cabbage beans onions, garlic, Brussel sprouts
Drugs – aripiprazole – Abilify, antipsychotic
Treats schizophrenia, BPD, depression, Tourette’s syndrome, irritability
associated w/ autism
Reduces dopamine activity when it is too high, and helps w/ symptoms like
hallucinations
Fluphenazine – antipsychotic – treats schizophrenia
Avoid if glaucoma, enlarge prostate, dysuria, seizures, overactive thyroid
gland, gait imbalance, liver, kidney, heart disease, bad balance
Venlafaxine – Effexor, antidepressant, nerve pain meds
Tx depression, GAD, panic disorder, social anxiety d/o
May increase suicidal thoughts or actions
Can cause serotonin syndrome – hallucinations, delusions, agitation, coma,
tachycardia , cardiac arrhythmias, dizzy, loss of consciousness, seizures,
shaky, muscle tremors or stiff muscles, sweating, n/v, htn
Clozapine – versacloz, fazaclo, Clozaril,
Antipsychotic, schizophrenia, lowered risk of suicidal risk in pts with
schizophrenia or schizoaffective d/o
Cause bowel obstruction, slows down gi, constipation, blockage, paralytic
ileus can be fatal
Targets neuro transmitter – good at treating schizophrenia
Desmopressin acetate – DVAP, antidiuretic and clotting promoter
Treats DI, bedwetting problems, certain bleeding disorder
Causes the body to lose too much fluid & become dehydrated
Freq. urination, and increased third caused by certain types of brain
injury/brain surgery
Ethics – good vs. evil moral principles that governs a persons behavior or
conducting of an activity
Morals- sense of right or wrong
