, The type of human services organization that I would like to work for is one that helps
homeless youth. With the right people in their life, they can become a productive person. I have
witnessed changed lives first hand. I have volunteered with youth for several years. The vast
majority of homeless and wayward youth do not want to be where they are. Most of them left
home due to abuse and not being accepted by their family. Other homeless youth have been
emancipated off of foster care. Unfortunately, a staggering proportion of these youth lack the
skills and resources to survive. A majority never completes high school (Fern, 2013, p. 2).
Without the advantage of at least a high school diploma, these kids are all forced into poverty.
When they are on the streets over half of the youth, end up abusing drugs and alcohol. Abusing
drugs and alcohol is a way to feel accepted and also a way to avoid feeling the pain in their life. I
feel a true calling to help the homeless youth. After all aren’t the youth supposed to be our
future?
The moral responsibilities that I would have to foster while working with homeless
youth are as follows. I would have to have the utmost amount of integrity. An abused, neglected,
unaccepted, and unloved child feels abandoned. Gaining their trust is not an easy task. It is vital
to building a trusting relationship with the youth while displaying ethical behavior. The moral
responsibilities towards the young people and kids cannot be taken lightly. The moral
responsibility to empower them and meet their basic needs is imperative. I will have the moral
responsibility to make decisions and take action towards creating change. Moral commitment to
the community is also part of my responsibility. Providing the needed services to help the youth
and community is a priority over any self-interest. Being selfless is part of having integrity. It is
