, The medical field is always changing and improving thru technology and science, yet it is
still not available to everyone. The Democratic party made real the principle that every
American should have access to quality healthcare, and no one should go bankrupt just because
they get sick-and they have vowed to never stop fighting to protect that principle (Democratic
National Committee, 2019). Healthcare is an essential need for one to maintain good health
status. However, this is one ethical dilemma in our country. Should healthcare be a right or is it
a privilege is a question that is raised often? I believe healthcare and healthcare insurance is a
right and should be available to all in order to maintain themselves physically, emotionally, and
should be affordable to everyone.
Healthcare should be available to any and all persons who are needing it, regardless of
their financial or insurance status. Lack of insurance often leads to poorer health outcomes.
Uninsured individuals are diagnosed at more advanced disease stages than the insured. The
uninsured also have higher mortality rates (Borchelt, 2018). Financial strain should not impact a
person’s ability to seek care for an illness. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, more than 20
million Americans have gained health care coverage and the uninsured rate has been cut
almost in half (Democratic National Committee, 2019). With the ethical dilemma discussed here
about healthcare rights, the problem is that healthcare is not available and affordable to
everyone. With diving into this problem more, the main issue is that people who are not
insured cannot afford the healthcare services that they need due to the out-of-pocket expenses
that are astronomical. Hospitals frequently charge uninsured patients two to four times what
health insurers and public programs actually pay for hospital services (Garfield, et al., 2019).
Some alternatives to health insurance are cost-sharing programs, short-term insurance, and
