There are four main re-entry goals all inmates have as a guideline to achieve in order for
successful re-entry. Addressing inmates' post-incarceration housing needs, assisting inmates in
obtaining post-release employment, providing resources for mental health, medical, and
substance abuse treatment during and after incarceration, and connecting offenders with
appropriate government benefits are the four goals for inmates entering re-entry. There are some
barriers that inmates will encounter like achieving these goals, getting, and keeping a good
support system, and continuing a positive lifestyle.
My client is a thirty-two-year-old female with two children aged ten and five. Her name
is Barbra Green, and she was convicted of drug possession along with child endangerment. She
was charged and sentenced to two years and six months in jail. She suffers from addiction and
has depression, anxiety, and anger issues. My client states that her children’s biological father
would physically, mentally, and sexually abuse her and was also an addict and got her into using
various narcotics. My client is currently clean and sober and has been in rehabilitation, therapy,
and has been prescribed medications for her depression and anxiety. She is progressing in her
programs and is now getting ready for re-entry. She has been involved with a religious group that
has been helping her through her transitional programs. She has slowly gained confidence in her
social skills and has even managed to get certified in hospital management. She is on a positive
path to making a new life for herself.
The fact that moms of children under the age of 18 make up the majority of those
incarcerated women is significant. Contrary to the majority of criminal men, many of these
women who are currently incarcerated have exclusive custody of their children and wish to
continue raising them following their release. An average female prisoner has 2.5 children. As a
