1. What are the broad categories of violence?

consent.
f. Intimate partner violence: physical, sexual, / psychological abuse on a
current/ former partner.
g. Child abuse: recent act / failure to act on part of a parent/ caretaker that
results in death, physical/ emotional harm, exploitation, or sexual abuse.
h. Elder abuse: neglect, physical, sexual, financial, or psychological abuse;
exploitation, abandonment dec. quality of life.
i. School violence
j. Hate crimes

2. What is the difference between abuse and neglect- provide an example?
a. Abuse: a recent act on part of a parent/ caretaker which result in death, serious
physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation.

b. Neglect: failure to act on behalf of the parent/ caretaker which can result in
death, physical harm, emotional harm, or sexual abuse.

a. Adolescents: they may not be as open. They may only give you the information

with them. Or may not say anything about the abuser because it can be
someone in their family. Also, they may not say anything about any type of
abuse because other adolescents may think that saying something shows
weakness or may not be real at all.
b. Elders: Assessing elder abuse can be difficult because of the older person’s
isolation form community, immobility, fear of the abuser, & inability to report
because of cognitive impairments.
i. Elders are often unwilling to report abuse. The abuser may be their own
family.
ii. They may be unsure of who to contact.
iii. Many elders may prefer to stay at home even if it means suffering abuse.
c. Children:
i. The abuser may be present in the room!!!!
ii. Establish a reassuring environment
iii. Do not coerce the child to answer question offering a reward.
iv. Establish their understanding & ask simple questions.
v. Questions should be direct
vi. Avoid yes/ no questions, give the child many choices as possible.
7. What are key components of the physical exam and documentation for which nurses
are responsible?
a. Providing privacy for the pt.
