Week 3 Assignment Worksheet: The Cocktail Party Phenomenon

Respond to the following prompts:

Using LIRN or other reliable online resources to respond to the following:

1. Define selective attention in your own words.
Your answer: I think selective attention is like “selective hearing”. Basically, only paying
attention to what you want to hear and pay attention to.

2. Describe how selective attention happens in the brain. Do NOT describe the test.
Your answer: Selective attention happens in the brain when something catches your attention
immediately. You can still hear the person in front of you but at the same time zone them out
while listening to what’s going on behind you. It is amazing how the brain can accomplish
this.

3. Explain dichotic listening in terms of what is happening at the party.
Your answer: In one study, Reiss and Molis (2021) used dichotic vowel stimuli. One group
of listeners had normal hearing and the other group had hearing loss. While the normal
hearing group heard the presence of 2 vowels, the hearing loss group only heard one. Their
findings determined that having full hearing capacity you can be able to recognize speech
better than those of bad hearing.
