The importance of making school uniforms mandatory in all elementary, middle, and high schools would
make a big difference to the children and parents’ lives.
There are pros and cons for schools making wearing uniforms mandatory. The pros outweigh the cons in
many ways. It can reduce a lot of bullying. It saves many families money on having to buy a lot of different
outfits, especially if they have many children of school age. It can save parents a lot of time in the morning too.
No need to go crazy looking for an outfit to wear for each child.
Studies show that school uniforms reduce anxiety about appearance and promote self-confidence through a
feeling of belonging. These findings are noteworthy in this day and age of social media, when children are
constantly comparing themselves to others. A feeling of unity and togetherness is inspired when our students
are dressed in uniform. This attitude can help with the overall morale of the student body and stimulates school
spirit. (Mayville, 2019)
There is a sense of security as well. School uniforms can decrease violence and theft, preventing gang
members from wearing their colors or signs at school. School uniforms can also play a role in enhancing
school safety and creating a positive learning environment. When all students are dressed in the same attire, it
becomes easier for school staff to identify intruders or individuals who do not belong on campus. (Sanchez,
2023)
Wearing school uniforms also helps students not worry about staying up to date with fashion. Uniforms can
also instill a sense of discipline, professionalism, and pride in one’s appearance, which can be beneficial as
students transition into the workforce. One of the arguments in favor of school uniforms is that they can have a
positive impact on academics. Proponents believe that when students are dressed in the same attire, it
eliminates distractions related to clothing choices and allows them to focus more on their studies. (Sanchez,
2023)
There have been some arguments about uniforms taking away student’s individualism. They argue that
clothing is a form of self-expression and that by mandating a specific uniform, schools are inhibiting students
from expressing their unique personalities. (Sanchez, 2023)
No matter what, the pros outweigh the cons in so many ways. It’s what’s best for the student and the parent.
