Portfolio Assignment
SUS1501 – Sustainability and Greed
Student Name: Fatima Zoutenberg
Student Number: 54141362
Date: 02 October 2015
Teaching Assistant Name: Hercules Boshoff
Declaration:

By submitting this portfolio, I implicitly declare that this is my own work except for the
“Introduction” which was kindly written for me by my lecturer.

I am aware that if ANY unacknowledged copying is detected in ANY answer, I will get 0 (zero)
for the entire assignment.

Introduction

My aim in compiling this portfolio was to reflect on the things that have struck me throughout
this crazy module.

My starting point for doing this was to revisit my opinions to the multiple choice questions
which were presented in the Crossroads assignment. I present these current opinions, together
with my original opinions, and some brief notes in the section entitled: “Back at the
Crossroads!”

Once I have done this, I draw some key conclusions about this crazy module and about the
things that did indeed strike me.

Back at the Crossroads!

,1. “The assets of the three richest people in the world match the combined annual GDP’s of the 48 poorest
countries.” My personal opinion on this statement is most closely described by:
a. Good for them – they worked hard to get their wealth
b. The only problem I have with this is that this money is in their bank account and not in mine
c. No problem with this – many of these people give huge amounts to charities
d. I think that it is morally wrong for anyone to have that much money
e. I think that active steps should be taken to correct such immoral wealth imbalances

Notes: According to Forbes 10 richest people in the world, Bill Gates is number one. When he dies he
does not plan on leaving a ‘large’ amount of money to his kids. In 2011, it was reported that he was only
leaving them each with 10 million dollars. He says that “They won’t have anything like that. They need to
have a sense that their own work is meaningful and important,” Bill said. “You’ve got to make sure they
have a sense of their own ability and what they’re going to go and do.” He says that he wants his kids to
find their self-worth and remain balanced, and not allow huge amounts of money to make them lazy and
accomplish nothing. He is leaving the remainder of his fortune to The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation;
they are focused on eliminating poor health and poverty.

As I stated in my previous assignment , I believe by building myself up ,reaching my goals and being
successful for myself first ,I can help and do so much more for others. I would have the means (money) to
buy or donate to these organisations. By working for your own money, one acquires a set of value to it.
Usually, people apply themselves more and grow, in order to receive more money. It is seen as a
motivation and a reward. Bill Gates changed our future, he helped us evolve .Perhaps one of the
recipients will be the next Bill Gates. It is people who make money and not money that makes people. A
child with a soccer ball can be more content than a child with an iphone. These just confirm my original
answer. In “it’s all in the outcome- consequentialism ” , it is stated that ‘Utilitarianism holds that any action
is judged as good if that act maximizes the total amount of good in a system,’ the aspect of they are
giving away majority of their money is for the greater good.

2. “Unless fossil-fuel use slows dramatically, the earth’s average temperature could rise by six degrees
Celsius in the next 100 years.” My personal opinion on this statement is most closely described by:
a. Who cares?
b. I don’t believe this climate change nonsense
c. Six degrees will make winters much more bearable to me personally
d. I’m a bit concerned about this, but there is nothing that I can do about it
e. I’m a bit concerned about this, but why should I invest my personal time, effort or money in solving a
general social problem.
f. I think that individually we can and should strive to solve this problem for the greater good

Notes: In order to really make a huge difference, each and everyone one of us need to work together.
We need to educate our youth about the importance of our Earth and not only tell, but show them what
we need to do to improve and sustain our planet. We need to manage and reduce our emissions, buy
renewable energy; conserving energy is vital. Turn off lights and any other electrical equipment, buy
Energy-Star certified products, and try to travel in a group to work using one car. We can buy food that is
locally produced; this is not only good for our environment but our economy. Install solar panels, recycle
and reuse. We need to united and make a positive impact. Imagine the difference in a scenario one
where everyone works together and adapt and change for the betterment of our planet and in scenario
two where only a few adapt and change, while other continues to abuse their resources. Whatever it is
that the people who changing are doing would not matter; because the people, who are abusing the
resources, may use more than they ‘share’. So this will not make that much of a difference.

Individually we unite and change, or we will become extinct by our own doing. These just confirm my
original answer. It is mentioned in the learning units that ‘We must want to keep going as a species.
Because the alternative is that we die out – that we go extinct. Actually, most of us want more than just to
make sure that we don't go extinct. Most of us want our children and their children to grow up in a world
which is at least as good as the world we grew up in. This is the essence of sustainability’, this is also a
form of utilitarianism, as mentioned in learning unit it’s all about the outcome.
