SURVEY LAB

Analyze the Course Evaluation survey that Fredonia administers to students.
Assess the validity of the survey by answering the questions below.

1. What type of items does this survey use?

The items used in this survey are mostly restricted items as a Likert scale
is used. Although we do see an open-ended question which could make
this partially open-ended while the rest is restricted, it is not at the very
end but is still incorporated.

This survey appears to have 3 sections, one for the course, the professor
who taught this course, and what I believe are the certain “qualities” a
course reflects (e.g. skilled, creative, connected, responsible).

2. Analyze the survey using the “Rules for Writing Survey Items”:

a. Use simple words/language. Provide at least one example of an item that
could be changed to reflect this rule. Revise the wording to improve the item.

None of the survey questions are “questions”, just statements or words.
Either change these statements into questions (e.g. “Did the tasks
performed in this course support your intellectual growth? 1. Definitely not,
2. No, 3. Not sure, 4. Yes, 5. Definitely yes”) or don’t call them statements
and instead say “On a scale from 1-5, with 1 being Definitely not and 5
being Definitely yes, list how relevant you best reflect with these
statements.”

The options for statements and words seem as awkward responses (e.g.
responding 1: Very Poor to “in terms of my own learning, this course
achieved its stated objectives”). While 1: Very Poor-6: Excellent fits with
“Overall rating of the course, almost all the other statements would fit
better with Strongly Disagree - Strongly Agree. I would recommend
changing “Overall rating of the course” to “I benefited from this course” or
separate Very Poor-Excellent.
