ERVAREN STRESS
Samenvatting
Achtergrond

Abstract
Background
There is growing evidence that self-compassion is associated with better mental health, but
understanding of the pathways that mediate this relationship is still limited. In the context of
healthy aging, in this study middle-aged adults (40-70 years) were examined to determine
whether the degree of self-compassion is related to their mental health, and whether that
relationship is mediated by the degree of perceived stress.
Method
In this cross-sectional study data were collected using an online self-report questionnaire. The
questionnaire included demographic data and validated translated questionnaires to measure
the three main variables, the SCS-SF, the PSS-10 and the MHC-SF. Respondents were recruited
by snowball sampling through flyers and social media. The questionnaire was completed in full
by 171 participants. Data were analysed in SPSS 28.
Results
Self-compassion was associated with lower perceived stress (r = -.65) and better mental health
(r = .45). Perceived stress showed a significant inverse relationship with mental health (r = -.53)
In addition, self-compassion had a significant indirect effect on mental health via the mediator
perceived stress (ab = 0.229).
Discussion
This study complements and confirms findings from previous studies that have investigated the
relationships between self-compassion, stress and mental health. The results suggest that
adopting a kind, accepting and thoughtful attitude towards oneself during setbacks or failures in
the life course may have benefits in reducing stress and promoting mental health in adults in
midlife.
