Nurses’ role in the high death rate related to medical negligence in Academic
Hospitals in the Gauteng Province.
2. INTRODUCTION:
The Gauteng Provincial Health Member of Executive Council (MEC), Dr.
Nomathemba Mokgethi, revealed in a written reply to questions from the Democratic
Alliance in provincial legislature that there has been a dramatic rise in cases of
patient negligence in Gauteng’s Public hospitals. These cases have gone up to 6910
cases recorded in 2021 (Gatticchi, 2022). (Sobuwa, 2022). The MEC has confirmed
that the circumstances of injuries included clinical administration, clinical process,
healthcare associated infections, blood products, patient accidents, infrastructure
and other. According to Alex Patrick of the Times Live News Reporter,1945 people
died in Gauteng public hospitals in the financial year of 2021 after severe adverse
events. Of these, 1015 were at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic
Hospital, in Johannesburg Gauteng (Patrick, 2022).
Nurses have the responsibility according to the Scope of Practice R.744 to
Provide basic health care services.
Insure the safe implementation of nursing care and the execution there of.
To develop an integrated, comprehensive nursing care plan for the promotion
of activities of daily living, self-care, treatment, and rehabilitation.
Refer a healthcare user timeously and appropriately to other members of the
multidisciplinary team.
Implement relevant nursing protocols and guidelines.
Facilitate the attainment of optimum health for the individual (Mkhize, 2020).
It is thus unclear whether nurses are engaging in medical negligence and what the
influence is that nurses had on the 1015 medical negligence related deaths that
occurred in 2021.
The aim of this study is to explore and to define the nurses influence on the high
rates of death related to medical negligence for education institutions to improve the
quality of nurses produced.
