The ethical issues that need to be considered in psychological research into mental
health is the right to withdraw, informed consent, deception (telling the participants
exactly what the experiment is about), confidentiality, debrief (discussing what the
experiment was about after the experiment was conducted with the participants),
protection from harm (this could be physical, emotional and psychological) and privacy.
One organisation involved in clinical psychology is the British Psychological Society
(BPS). The BPS is the representative body for psychology in the United Kingdom. Their
code of conduct is based upon four ethical guidelines: respect, competence,
responsibility and integrity (Bps.org.uk, 2019).
Respect is for the dignity of the participants who are involved in the experiment.
Psychologists value participants dignity and worth. To achieve this, psychologists should
consider privacy, respect, the impact on the broader environment, consent and the
importance of compassionate care (empathy, sympathy, commitment and courage).
Competence refers to their ability to have a professional standard. Psychologists value
their professional standards. To achieve this, psychologists should consider the care
needed to serve people, the need to maintain technical and practical skills and caution in
making knowledge claims. Psychologists should accept appropriate responsibility for
what is in their power, control or management. To achieve this, psychologists should
consider responsible use of their knowledge and skills and respect for the welfare of
humans, non-humans and the living world. Integrity includes being honest and truthful in
one’s actions and words. To achieve this, psychologists should consider honesty,
unbiased representation, fairness, avoiding conflicts of interest, maintaining personal
and professional boundaries and addressing misconduct.
Another organisation involved in clinical psychology is the American Psychological
Association (APA). The APA is an organisation that represents psychology in the US
(Apa.org, 2019). The APA has 10 sections in the code of conduct: Resolving Ethical
Issues, Competence, Human Relations, Privacy and Confidentiality, Advertising and
other Public Statements, Record Keeping and Fees, Education and Training, Research
and Publication, Assessment and Therapy.
