- Skeletal Muscle
● Voluntary control
● Single, very long, multinucleated, striated appearance
● Attached to bones or to skin
● Contraction moves body parts
- Smooth Muscle
● Involuntary control
● Single spindle shape, single nucleus, no striations
● In walls of hollow visceral organs (except heart)
- Cardiac Muscle
● Involuntary control
● Branched cells, single nucleus, striated (but not as heavily)
● Only found in the walls of the heart
Characteristics of Muscle Tissue
- Elasticity
● Ability to recoil
- Excitability
● Responds to stimuli (like nervous tissue)
- Extensibility
● Ability to be stretched
- Contractibility
● Ability to shorten
