Door de bloei van de handel was de 17e eeuw voor de Republiek een Gouden
Eeuw
Er waren 4 sociale lagen:
1. Rijke kooplieden/handelsfamilies
a. Door slim te investeren -> nog rijker
b. Kochten dure huizen en schilderijen
c. Veel politieke macht -> bestuurden de steden en gewesten
2. Winkeliers en gespecialiseerde ambachtslieden
a. Verdienden soms goed
b. Kochten ook schilderijen en andere luxe dingen
3. Loonarbeiders
a. Laag loon, hard werken
4. Armen
a. Geen vast werk
b. Ouderen
c. Zieken
d. Profiteerden het minst van de welvaart
e. Soms wel hulp van kerk en rijke handelaren -> brood, kleding of
turf (voor kachel). Wezen, zieken en ouderen -> opgevangen in
speciale tehuizen + leerden misdadigers te werken voor geld
Verschillen tussen arm en blijf bleven heel groot
Veel inwoners van Holland: buitenlanders -> deden dus aan migratie

o Vluchtelingen: geloof. Wilden in protestants land wonen
o Meesten: werk hoopten te vinden
