A LETTER TO GOD
SUMMARY
A Letter to God is a beautiful story which shows the faith of a poor peasant Lencho on God. His house was the
only house in the valley. In the beginning of the story, Lencho is expecting some rain which was necessary for
a good harvest. His joys knew no bounds when the rain started but soon the rain changed into a severe hail
storm which continued for an hour and destroyed all his crops. Lencho was filled with sadness at the loss of
his harvest. He felt that his family would go hungry that year because he had nothing to feed his family. There
was no hope of any help from anywhere except for the help of God. Lencho had such faith on God that he
decided to write a letter to God seeking his help in that hour of need. Though he was a farmer, he knew how to
write. So he wrote a letter to God in which he requested the God to send him hundred pesos as his crops had
been destroyed and he had nothing with him to sow his land again. He further wrote in the letter that if God did
not send him the money, his family would go hungry. He himself went to the city to post the letter. He put the
letter in an envelope, wrote 'To God' on the envelope, affixed a stamp on it and put it in the mail box. One of
the employees of the post office who was a postman and also helped as a helper in the post office saw the
letter addressed to God. He took the letter to the post master. When the postmaster saw the letter addressed
to God, he could not control his laughter and laughed a lot. But soon he became serious and decided to open
the letter to see what was written in the letter. He was very much impressed by the faith shown by the person
on God and he wanted to make a reply to the person in order not to shake his faith in God. But when he read
the letter, he understood that he needed more than paper and ink to make a reply. He needed hundred pesos
to make a reply. But being a considerate person, the post master did not give up. He asked the other post
office employees to give some money in charity, gave a part of his own salary and also asked his friends to
contribute in that charitable act. Finally, he was able to collect seventy pesos which he put in an envelope and
also put a piece of paper in the envelope on which it was written 'From God'. Next Sunday when Lencho came
to the town and asked for his letter, he was given the letter which was actually put in the mailbox by the
postmaster. When Lencho opened the envelope, he found the money inside. He was least surprised on seeing
the money because he had such strong faith in God that he knew that God would not turn down his request
and He would certainly help him. But when he counted the money, he was shocked because he found thirty
pesos less and he felt that the post office employees were a bunch of crooks who had stolen his thirty pesos.
He immediately wrote another letter to God asking him to send him the rest of thirty pesos but he requested
God not to send him money through the post as the post office employees were a bunch of crooks who had
stolen his money. As soon as he put the letter in the mailbox, the postmaster, who was observing everything
while sitting in his office, went to open the letter but he was shocked to see the reaction of Lencho as he had
called his benefactors a bunch of crooks.

A. Answer the following questions in about 40 to 50 words each:
1. Who was Lencho? Where was his house situated?
A. Lencho was a poor but hardworking farmer. His house, which was the only house in the entire valley, was
situated on the top of a low hill. From this height, one could see the river and the field of ripe corn dotted with
the flowers that always promised a good harvest.
2. What had Lencho done throughout the morning? Why?
A. Throughout the morning, Lencho had done nothing else but see the sky towards the north-east because the
earth needed a downpour or at least a shower and Lencho had seen dark clouds gathering in that direction.
3. What were Lencho's wife and children doing while Lencho was looking towards the north-east direction?
A. Lencho's wife was preparing supper and his older boys were working in the field while the smaller ones
were playing near the house.
4. What happened while the family was taking meals?
A. As the family was taking meals, it began to rain. One could see huge mountains of clouds coming from the
north-east direction. The air was fresh and sweet.
5. How did Lencho react when it began to rain? What did Lencho compare the raindrops with and why?
A. As began to r ain, Lencho went out to have the pleasure of feeling the rain on his body. On returning he
exclaimed that those weren't raindrops falling from the sky. They were new coins. He compared the big drops
of rain to ten cent pieces while the little ones were fives.
6. What happened suddenly? How did it prove disastrous?
A. Suddenly, it began to hail. Very large hailstones began to fall. Those hailstones resembled new silver coins.
The boys ran out to collect the frozen pearls. The hailstorm proved disastrous as it destroyed the crops of
Lencho.
7. What did Lencho hope? Did his hope come true?
A. Lencho hoped that the hailstorm would pass quickly. But his hope did not come true as it continued hailing
for an hour. The hail rained on the house, the garden, the hillside, the cornfield, on the whole valley. The field
was white, as if covered with salt. Not a leaf remained on the trees. The corn was totally destroyed. The
flowers were gone from the plants.
8. How did everyone feel after Lencho's crops were destroyed in the hailstorm?
