GABA is a major inhibitory neurotransmitter. It means that when GABA reaches and binds to specific
receptors located on a neuron, it reduces the activity of that neuron and makes it less likely to fire its
action potential.
GABA-A receptors containing α1 subunit are involve with sleep. α2, or α3 subunits are involves in
anxiety.
So GABA stops the excitatory neurons from transmitting signals, thus blocking anxiety.
