Key concepts in sport development
Case study 1
“A 16-year-old Muslim girl has excelled in Boxing, she has been asked to attend England squad trials
for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. Her family are fully supportive, however, the
Muslim community she lives in are unhappy and don’t want her to attend the trials.”
The barrier is that the 16-year-old Muslim girl that got asked to attend to England squad trails, is that
the community that she lives in do not approver her to go and attend and compete in the boxing
(sport). Which this can have a great impact on her because she could attend it and potentially make
it to England squad which could result in begging in professional career after it which means that this
could be a lifetime opportunity for her. But it can have a huge impact on her and the community she
lives in because it’s a group of black and ethnic minorities groups (community) which could knock
her confidence down. Which this is very important because she is in the performance stage in boxing
which is very high level and getting a chance to attend the England squad trials she may have the
chance to become an elite boxer. Which this could have great benefits to her and massively help her
in future which could have a huge impact on her life, this could mean more income, which means
that she is more financially stable and would be able to support herself and her supportive family.
Which this could affect the black and ethnic minority’s because it is spreading the message out that
black and ethnic minorities should not participate in boxing or other sport at such a high level, which
this could mean that they are scared to even try to participate in boxing or sport or even to take part
in different sports. But there could a solution to this problem if she and her supportive family could
make an event in her local community and make an event in a local facility and invite everyone from
her local Muslim community and inform them why attending the boxing England trails would be a
great thing to do. Which then she could tell them how she could become a Muslim role model to
other’s in the community, could bring up other Muslim boxers such as Amir khan. For example; Amir
Khan was from Bolton from rough places and he has managed to get the top and thanks to this he
has become famous and made a fortune which then given back to the community and charities
which he used this for good and not bad also has managed to open extra clubs in Bolton so that the
children would be off the streets instead of in the gym. If this was to happen it could have a good
effect on black and ethnic minority’s because it could spread and give a message to the groups that
it can be achieved. Which this could change the minds of the Muslim community that she lives in by
showing great benefits of attending the trails. Most importantly being a role model could benefit the
young future generations to do the same. Another easy solution for the Muslim girl would be is to
not to listen to what the Muslim community thinks or says. Because others shouldn’t be in charge of
other people lives, she should just listen to what the supportive family are saying and to do what she
wants to do.
If she wants to do something than nothing should stop her from doing it so. Family supports you
fully then there’s nothing stopping you to achieve what you want also which means if she wants to
attend these trails then she shouldn’t worry about the community. The way that this will impact the
target groups is that individual will have the ability to make their own decision and have great
benefits such as having an active healthy lifestyle.
